“Dealing with Smoke Part Two” continues the gritty high-stakes drama of Part One, as protagonist Michael finds himself deep in the weeds of drug dealing on his Army base. It’s written in a raw, realist style that sounds like Michael is offering a monolog/confession in a conversational tone. He does not explain, justify or apologize. He just relates what he’s done and what he’s seen. There’s a rough, raw honesty to him. As a reader, I find myself hoping he reforms but knowing that he won’t.Part Two left me interested in finding out what happens next in the military/crime saga. I look forward to Part Three of the trilogy.
